Veolia Towers Hamburg moved another step closer to locking up a spot in the Play-Ins by defeating already-relegated Tigers Tübingen 93-78 on the road. Hamburg took the third quarter 28-16 and VJ King led the way with 19 points to snap a four-game losing streak on the road. Jonas Wohlfarth-Bottermann added 15 points in Hamburg’s first away victory since March 10 and a 16-17 record. Tübingen, who knew they were ProA bound already coming into the game, lost their 10th straight contest for a 6-27 record despite Frank Gaines tallying 20 points.

Game Summary: Hamburg twice jumped out to eight-point leads in the opening 4 minutes and were up 15-7. The hosts responded with an 11-3 surge and knotted the game 18-18. And Chrisoph Philipps’ long three-pointer at the buzzer gave Tübingen the lead 25-23 after 10 minutes. Tübingen temporarily went ahead by three points to start the second quarter. The game was tight with three lead changes and four ties with Hamburg using a mini 8-2 spurt to move ahead 45-40. And the guests went into the break with a 47-43 advantage.
Hamburg blew the game open with the first 11 points of the second half for a 58-43 lead. The guests did not slow down and the cushion swelled to 21 points - 71-50. Tübingen were able to get the gap down to 72-58 but trailed 75-59 after 30 minutes. Hamburg pushed the lead out to 21 points early in the fourth quarter. Tübingen gave one last surge and managed to get within 84-72 with just more than 3 minutes to play. Hamburg responded with the next six points to end any comeback hopes.

Numbers Please: Hamburg shot 58.9 percent for the game - 65.8 percent on two-pointers and 44.4 percent from long range - while Tübingen could only connect on 42.9 percent of their attempts.

Player of the Game: VJ King not only scored 19 points - on 6-of-7 shooting and a perfect 7-of-7 from the foul line - but he added 6 rebounds and 1 steal.

The Germans: Jonas Wohlfarth-Bottermann scored 15 points to go with 2 rebounds and 1 assist while Lukas Meisner hit 3 three-pointers for 12 points and Nico Brauner added 8 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists for the winners. Mateo Seric scored 9 points for Tübingen, who also had Daniel Keppeler tally 7 points.

Also Newsworthy Part I: Tübingen's biggest problem in their fight against relegation has been the third quarter. Danny Jansson's team lost the third stanza 28-16 - for the 15th time in the last 16 losses Tübingen failed to win the third quarter.

Also Newsworthy Part II: Hamburg could not secure their berth in the Play-Ins on their own. They would have needed a victory plus a NINERS Chemnitz win at home over Basketball Löwen Braunschweig and a Bamberg Baskets home loss to RASTA Vechta. Braunschweig did lose in Chemnitz 82-68 but Bamberg beat Vechta 94-65.

What's Up Next: Tübingen’s final game in the easyCredit BBL will be on the road on Sunday May 12 when they face MLP Academics Heidelberg. Hamburg will finish the regular season with a home game against BG Göttingen on Sunday May 12.
